The Influences of Reserpine and Chlorpromazine on the Anesthetic Effect of Alcohol

Abstract
|
|
|
In order to investigate the influences of reserpine and chlorpromazine pretreatment on the anesthetic effect of alcohol, the following experimental studies were carried out with selected albino rabbits.
The anesthetic effect of alcohol was compared by measuring the induction time, anesthetic time, recovery time and total time between alcohol administration alone group and reserpine and chlorpromazine pretreated group. Beside above study, serum alcohol concentration, body temperature, catecholamine content of cerebrum, serum calcium and magnesium concentration were also compared between these two groups, respectively.
The results were obtained as follows:
1. The induction time of anesthesia and anesthetic time induced by alcohol administration were shortened by the pretreatment of reserpine. The induction time of anesthesia induced by alcohol administration was shortened by the pretreatment of chlorpromazine but the anesthetic time, recovery time and total time of anestnesia were prolonged.
2. The blood alcohol concentration after alcohol administration was markedly increased by the pretreatment of reserpine and chlorpromazine.
3. The body temperature of rabbit was not influenced by the alcohol administration alone or pretreatment of reserpine and chlorpromazine.
4. The catecholamine content of cerebrum of rabbit was not influenced by the alcohol administration alone or pretreatment of chlorpromazine but markedly decreased when the rabbit was pretreated with reserpine.
5. The serum calcium concentration of rabbit was not influenced by the alcohol administration alone but serum magnesium concentration tends to be decreased and then serum calcium and magnesium concentration were more markedly decreased by the pretreatment of reserpine and chlorpromazine.
